The construction and installation of small individual septic systems up to a daily design sewage flow of 10,000 litres per day are regulated under the Ontario Building Code (OBC). The OBC regulates the design, construction, operation and maintenance of on-site septic systems for most single family homes, through Part 8 of the Building Code.
In most areas, the local municipality’s Building Department examines plans, issues permits, and carries out inspections for on-site sewage systems regulated under the OBC. In other areas, the approval responsibility has been delegated to local Conservation Authorities and Health Units.
Remember, a building permit is required for a septic system for:
- Installing a new system
- Repairing an existing system
- Replacing part or all of your system
